Recall Mailday: Playoff Cards

The past 2 weeks have brought 2 more Playoff Rookie cards to my collection, so I figured I'd take a minute to talk about them.

1. Playoff Hogg Heaven 2004 Rookie Hoggs insert (#ed 084/750)

From what I can tell, Playoff made, in 2004, a set called Hogg Heaven and included several insert sets within the set. This insert card, Rookie Hoggs, was a numbered and rare insert. The set is not listed in the monthly Beckett card values, but this is still a nice card I estimate is worth around $5 to add to the collection.

Also, in 2014, Playoff released a high end set, Honors, where all of the Rookie cards were jersey relic cards. All of the pieces were used at the 2004 NFL Rookie Premier, the most authentic NFL Rookie piece you can get in a card before the season starts.

So, I added a 2004 Playoff Honors Rookie Tandems card, booked at $20 (I payed $5 for it) where Rivers is teamed with Saints WR Devery Henderson. Not exactly sure why they are teamed up on this card.

So there you have it, today's look at my Rivers collection!

Sorry About the Delay!

I'm sorry I delayed on my posts. First my work hours increased, and then my computer broke and I don't exactly need it at the moment with my smartphone around.

I'm going to work on re-cataloging my collection, showing you what I have in the collection and try to take the time to post something whether about a new item received in the mail or a Rivers fact.

In The Mail Today-Jersey, Epix, Chrome and more!

The newest editions to my collection...

Today was an amazing mailday. First thing to talk about is my new jersey that arrived today. I have a rare Reebok Practice Red Shirt jersey, thanks to troynicole33 on eBay!

One of my favorite sets of all time is the 2013 Rookies & Stars set. It was so colorful and full of awesome designs, I just love the set. So I found this Holofoil card, thanks to sjosing on eBay, #ed 19/99. Take a look!

Just to let people know, Rookies & Stars used to be an annual set released by Leaf every year. However, Leaf lost their licensing, and sold the name to Panini.

The parallels are called "Holofoils" in this set, traditionally named by Leaf, with the "Longevity" in the backround. Leaf always had sold the Rookies & Stars Longevity set, which was a higher end release of the product, and that often get's people confused because of the Longevity on the cards.

Continuing with my 2010 Epix collection, the Epix Silver Parallel arrived today. This one is very much like the gold one that came the other day, it's just #ed to 250, and isn't gold foiled. A special thanks to sm3inc on eBay! Take a look!

My 2013 Topps Chrome Xfractor arrived today. If you're not sure what an Xfractor is, check out the Refractor Explanation label on the right sidebar of the page. Thanks to desertlvr49 on eBay for this one!

A 2008 Leaf Rookies & Stars Gold jersey also came today. It's not numbered, but it sure looks pretty! Thanks to yankeephanatic609 on eBay for this card!

There's my Mail Day! Sure was great!

Game to Remember- First 400 yard game

September 20th, 2009. Rivers was the second week into his 4th season as the starting QB for the San Diego Chargers, coming off a fantastic Monday Night late opener in Oakland where the Chargers had just outlasted the Oakland Raiders 24-20. Against a fantastic defense led by Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Ed Reed, Rivers hit home on 25 passes gaining 436 yards and 2 TD's, still just missing the win by loosing 31-26. Darren Sproles AND Vincent Jackson both shared 100 yard receiving games. It was the first of 6 400 yard games in his career, and remains the 2nd highest total in his personal history,

In the Mail Today- 2010 Epix Cards.

The newest editions to my collection...

2010 Epix was one of my targets this week to expand the collection on. I love the look of the set, so I wanted it to be one of the first sets to complete in my collection. A special thanks to mayco23 and allcardsfreeshipping on eBay for getting me these deals!

The one on the left is a Game Used jersey edition of the card #ed 31/125. It looks just like the base card except for where they cut out the X in the card and put a jersey square to cover it. The card on the right is a blue parallel, #ed 8/50. When it's moved from left to right in the right light setting, it looks like there are electrons running from left to right on the card. It's a pretty cool parallel.

If you don't know what a parallel is, look at the blog labels on the right and click "Parallel Explanation." It'll take you to a link where I explain parallels.

A game used is a card that has a piece of a jersey used in an official NFL (or in some cases NCAA) game. Just making that clear. ;)

In the Mail today- 2014 Topps Chrome Variation

The newest edition to my collection...

My 2014 Topps Chrome collection is continuing to expand. A special thanks to jshsports on eBay!

This is a 2014 Topps Chrome Photo Variation SP. To those of you readers who are scratching your heads going, "Huh?" here's basically what it means.

Topps chrome released the base set with all the base cards. In 1 of every 269 hobby packs, instead of seeing a Philip Rivers card that looks like this:

You'll see one like the one listed above. There are 30 different veteran variations and 25 different rookie variations in 2014 Topps Chrome, so in otherwords it's a rare card.

That's all out of the mail today. Another one down, so many more to go!

2014 Topps Chrome Rainbow... STARTED!

The newest editions to my collection...

I'm getting my 2014 Topps Rainbow started. A special thanks to scizscott on eBay for getting me this deal!

So, here's what I got in the mail today that are pictured above:
    Topps Chrome Refractor
    Topps Chrome XFractor
    Topps Chrome Purple Refractor
    Topps Chrome Blue Wave Refractor
Topps Chrome BCA Pink Refractor (#ed 265/399)
Topps Chrome Black Refractor (#ed 131/299)

Alright, so to my friends who don't know football cards who I know are reading this blog, here's the basic principle of my mail arrival.

Topps Company released their annual base set earlier in 2014. Shortly after they released that, they released Topps Chrome, which is basically a clear chrome covered version of their base card. In the Topps Chrome set, there are parallels. Parallels look just like the regular card, except the border may be different, maybe the print isn't black anymore, it's gold, etc. In Topps Chrome, it's usually a border change, and their called Refractors.

Now, Topps Chrome, there are several different refractors. A Refractor parallel is simply the regular, or base, card that when it hits light right, it reflects the light in a rainbow type of way. You see a rainbow appear. See the image below to kinda understand what I mean.

See the rainbow type of light? That's a refractor. Now, most refractors don't have that camo pattern around it, but that's okay.

Next, the XFractor. The Xfractor is when they design a pattern in the chrome that makes it look almost like a bunch of x's are popping off the card. Observe below.
See that pattern it makes? That would be an Xfractor. When you move the card up and down, those big X's run up and down the card.

The last keyword you really need to know right now is Wave. Wave is still pretty new to the Topps Chrome technology, so it's only really found, I believe, in 2012 Topps Chrome and up. They've just become more common then they used to be. See the image below.

That is a wave card. See the waves it makes in the pattern? When you move the card left and right, it waves across the card.

So there's my big parallel explanation of the day. Some other sets have different types of parallels, but I'll worry about teaching you all those later when I get some.

   Go Rivers!
